Come join VACTB on Saturday August 12 at the Grand Opening of Maus Nissan. The event will run from noon to 4pm at Maus Nissan, located at 3923 US 19 in New Port Richie Florida.

To help celebrate the event, Army veteran artist, CWO Greg Crumbly, has donated two pieces of art work for auction. The first painting available for bid is a portrait of Captain Matt Bruce, host of Captain’s America – Third Watch on AM 860 radio. Captain Bruce is a Vietnam vet, a retired Fire-Rescue Captain and was a 1st responder to the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center. Greg will be on hand at the grand opening to put the final touches on this portrait.

Also being auctioned is a chance to have Greg commission a portrait of you or your family.

September 2017 - VACTB / AARP  911 Memorial Event

Art of Remembrance

Honoring 9/11

Every year, AARP offices across the country choose one day to close their doors, go out into the community and volunteer. This year, AARP Tampa Bay is making its Day of Service an event to honor veterans and first responders. By working with the Veteran’s Art Center of Tampa Bay (VACTB) and other community part-ners, AARP hopes to bring awareness to the effectiveness of art therapy.

WHEN: Saturday, September 9 from 12:00—4:00
WHERE: 6798 Crosswinds Dr. North, B106, St. Petersburg, FL 33710

FINE ARTS AS THERAPY:
Three activities comprise the event’s fine arts opportunities.

· Attendees may paint and decorate an art card to be sent to a service member overseas.
· Attendees may paint a tile with the theme of remembering 9/11. These tiles will remain at VACTB after the event to be placed into a display.
· Attendees may participate in an interest card and painting swap.

Each attendee will fill out an interest card and receive another attendee's interest card at random.
Each attendee will then create a painting inspired by another person’s interest card (hobby, etc.), which will then be given to and taken home by whomever filled out the interest card, facilitating a way for participants to meet and mingle as they exchange paintings.

MUSIC AS THERAPY:

A pilot music therapy program as supported by the VACTB to help veterans and first responders discover and learn the art of healing through art , or musical expression in a non-clinical environment.
· The class will begin July 31 and is scheduled to conclude on the Day of Service date of 9/9/2017 where AARP plans to engage with the local community around veterans in partnership with the VACTB.
· The final day of class will culminate in an event that showcases the curriculum to the community in conjunction with the 9/11 Day of Service held that weekend. The exhibit will honor and recognize veterans, the military, first responders and all their family members.
· The graduating class will take part in the day by interacting with attendees. A video of this pilot class will be the shared to showcase the class success with visitors to the center.
